FORT WORTH, Texas—During a special awards ceremony on July 9, 2005, the American Paint Horse Association recognized some of its top Novice Amateur, Amateur and Open competitors from the 2005 World Championship Paint Horse Show. Several high-point winners and reserve winners were named, as well as All-Around titles and other special awards. New to this year’s ceremony was the Rookie of the World title, which was awarded in three divisions—Novice Amateur, Amateur and Open.
Fourteen titles were awarded during the Open and Amateur portion of the show including:
• Karen Wildes of Lakeside, California, was the Reserve All-Around Novice Amateur winner. Wildes and her 5-year-old chestnut overo gelding, Slightly Fancy, were the Novice Amateur Western Horsemanship and Novice Amateur Western Pleasure World Champions. Wildes was awarded a pair of Western boots, courtesy of Boulet, spur straps, courtesy of Top Hand Tack, and a saddle pad, courtesy of Pro Orthopedics.
• Karen Wildes and Tiana Spitali, of Glendale, Arizona, shared the Novice Amateur Rookie of the World award. Wildes and Slightly Fancy received $1,000 and a custom-made Gist trophy buckle. Spitali and her 9-year-old red roan overo gelding, Dignifyed Sonny, were named World Champion in Novice Amateur Showmanship. Spitali and Dignifyed Sonny also received $1,000 and a custom-made Gist trophy buckle. This was the first year the Rookie of the World award, which was sponsored by Horse Illustrated, Young Rider and Gist Silversmiths, was offered.
• Lynn Hurst of Leesville, South Carolina, was the All-Around Novice Amateur winner. She and her 5-year-old bay tobiano gelding, Pik Me Up Some Bud, were the Reserve World Champions in Novice Amateur Hunter Under Saddle, Novice Amateur Hunter Hack and Novice Amateur Hunt Seat Equitation. • Zane Haverty of Krum, Texas, was named the Amateur Rookie of the World. Haverty and his 10-year-old bay tobiano stallion, Mark This Spot, owned by the Haverty Ranch, were the Amateur Reining World Champions. They also earned a reserve World Champion title in Amateur Working Cow Horse. For the award, Zane received $1,000 and a Gist custom-made trophy belt buckle.
• Jana Simons of Aubrey, Texas, was the Reserve All-Around Amateur. Jana and her 6-year-old bay overo gelding, Maximum Zippo, earned World Championships in Amateur Horsemanship 19-44, Amateur Showmanship 19-44, Amateur Hunter Under Saddle and Amateur Senior Western Pleasure 19-44. This award goes to the horse and rider team that earned the second-highest point total in a minimum of three categories. • Alisa Bernhard of Germantown, Wisconsin, earned the All-Around Amateur title with Fleetstreet Max, an 8-year-old sorrel overo gelding. This award goes to the horse and rider team that earned the highest point total in a minimum of three categories. The two earned World Champion titles in Amateur Hunt Seat Equitation 19-44, Amateur Working Hunter and Amateur Trail. • Ryan Painter of Sun City, California, was the High-Point Exhibitor of the World Show. This award is given to the exhibitor who earns the most points in a minimum of two categories at the World Show. Painter earned World Championships in Junior Hunter Hack, Senior Working Hunter and Breeding Stock Hunter Under Saddle. He also received a Reserve World Championship in Senior Hunter Hack and had five Top 10 placings. Painter was awarded a product certificate for $7,500, courtesy of Barnmaster.
• Bronc Boehnlein of Norco, California, was the Open Rookie of the World. Boehnlein’s 7-year-old brown tobiano mare, Kayluree, was exhibited by Todd Hampton of Chochilla, California, to a Senior Heeling World Championship and a third in the Senior Steer Stopping. Boehnlein received $1,000 and a custom-made Gist trophy buckle. This award was sponsored by Horse Illustrated, Young Rider and Gist Silversmiths.
• Reddys Review, a 13-year-old sorrel overo gelding owned by Shawnee Wayman of Salt Lake City, Utah, won the Super Gelding Award, High-Point English Horse and Reserve All-Around Horse at the 2005 World Show. The gelding was exhibited by Wayman, Charlie Cole of Pilot Point, Texas; Ryan Painter of Sun City, California; and Jason Martin of Pilot Point. Reddys Review was the Reserve World Champion in the Senior Hunter Hack. He received Top 10 honors in 11 other classes. • Strait Gunsmokensugar, an 8-year-old bay tobiano stallion owned by Fischer Farms of Wagner, South Dakota, earned the Oscar Crigler Cattle Award and was named the High-Point Western Horse and All-Around Horse. The stallion was exhibited by J.D. Yates of Pueblo, Colorado, and Robbie Boyce of Jacksboro, Texas. Strait Gunsmokensugar was the Reserve World Champion in Senior Tie-Down Roping and Senior Working Cow Horse. He also had two Top 10 finishes at the show. An annual non-qualifying event for registered American Paint Horses, the World Show included 175 classes, five challenge series classes, three sweepstakes events, a select sale, a trade show and many other special activities. Exhibitors demonstrated their skills in halter, Western, English, cattle, driving and speed classes.
